Music of the 1920's
Al Jolson- Al Jolson was the first openly Jewish American entertainer. He sang jazz and blues music. He often like to perform wearing blackface makeup and often sang songs that were traditionally African-American. He fought for equality for blacks on Broadway. One of his most famous songs was "Swanee."
Louis Armstrong- Louis Armstrong was an extremely popular jazz trumpet player and singer during the 1920s. He was a very influential figure in pop culture at the time for many reasons. First, he was very successful for an African-American at the time as the country was still racially divided. Many Americans were able to look past his race however and he became a very popular musician. He was very good at "scat" singing and often took risks in the way he sang and performed jazz music. Some of his most popular songs were "Potato Head Blues," "Muggles," and "West End Blues."
Jimmie Rodgers- Jimmie Rodgers is often known as the "father of country music." He was well-known for his yodeling and was one of the first popular country singers. He enjoyed going on traveling roadshows. Some of other nicknames were "The Blue Yodeler" and "The Singing Brakeman." Among his most popular songs were "T for Texas" and "In the Jailhouse Now."
